You may notice your dog has a small limp some time. You may feel that your dog is limping but not in pain. You must not ignore this problem. Unlike humans, dogs cannot tell us their pain. So as pet parents, we need to try to find the causes of our dog's lameness. If your dog's lameness is severe and it doesn't get better after your help, you need to take your dog to the veterinarian promptly. This article will help educate you on the most common causes of a gradual onset limp in dogs
Gradual Onset vs. Sudden
Limping in Dogs

There are two types of limping in dogs: sudden and gradual onset.

  • Sudden limping happens quickly, and is usually the result of an injury or trauma, like a broken bone or hurt paw.
  • Gradual onset limping occurs slowly over time, and is usually the result of a chronic condition.

3 Common Causes of Gradual
Onset Limping in Dogs

Joint disease is generally the main cause of gradual onset limping in dogs. Here are 3 common joint diseases that cause gradual wear and tear on your dog's joints and musculoskeletal system.

Arthritis

Arthritis is one of the most common degenerative diseases in dogs. In fact, by the time a dog reaches 8 years of age, they have an 80% chance of having arthritis. Arthritis is the painful degradation of the cartilage that lines the ends of bones inside your dog's joints. It can cause limping, difficulty getting up or climbing stairs, and general slowing down and stiffness. Larger purebred dogs like German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, and Golden Retrievers have a higher risk of arthritis. Small or mixed-breed dogs are also at risk. While there is no magic bullet for arthritis, keeping your dog at a healthy weight and avoiding weekend warrior syndrome are two simple things you can do to Reduced risk and accelerated disease.

Hip Dysplasia

Hip dysplasia can drastically reduce your beloved pet's quality of life, causing limping, general stiffness or slowing down, reluctance to go on walks, etc. Hip Dysplasia is a developmental orthopedic disease that directly affects the hip joints in dogs. Normal, healthy hip joints have a ball and socket that rotate freely. The ball part of the joint is the head of the femur while the socket (known as the acetabulum) is found on the pelvis. There are two of these ball and socket joints, one for each leg (same as in humans). In hip dysplasia, if both of these hip joints do not match up in form and shape, it causes your dog to develop a limp, sometimes due to the abnormal growth of one of the joints.

Cruciate Ligament Disease

Cruciate ligament injury is the most common orthopedic condition in dogs. Cranial cruciate ligament disease is the sudden (acute) or progressive (gradual onset) failure of the cranial cruciate ligament, which is similar to an ACL tear in people. When this ligament breaks, the stifle (AKA knee) becomes painful, unstable, and prone to arthritis – causing a limp. CCL surgery is the most common orthopedic surgery performed in dogs and is said to make up 85% of all dog orthopedic surgeries performed every year.
How to relieve the symptoms
of limping caused by joint diseases?

Joint problems are common in dogs, particularly in seniors and large breeds. Although there is no cure for this progressive condition, initiating appropriate management can help keep our dog active and improve their quality of life. Heat therapy is a great option.
Petietec Targeted Heating Therapy Braces are helpful for ongoing conditions such as arthritis, hip dysplasia and cruciate ligament disease in your dogs.

Happy Customers

Impeccable customer service

Watched Petietics Facebook, Instagram, and website for over a month before I purchased because I’m a skeptic. Every single review I saw were 5 stars and all extremely positive! So I finally purchased for my Sweet Angel Baby Snookie who will be 12 in July and is getting a little stiff as she ages. I want to do absolutely everything in my power to keep her not only comfortable but keep her active and young for as long as possible. She is my absolute heart. I have been so impressed with this company! Petietic customer service is impeccable!
I put these on for the first time today and she really seems to love it. She went to lay down and fell asleep with it on. I cannot thank you enough for making this product to help my puppy and other senior dogs. I would recommend this product to anyone!!!

Easy to use without slipping

My Cardigan Corgi was diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia at 10 months old. We were advised to use heat therapy which started with us using a wheat bag. We found this hard to make stay in the right place and also cover all his 'sore' spots, and so searched for another option. We came across the Petietec heat braces on Facebook and coincidentally our Physiotherapist had one for us to try. We love how easy the braces are to use, and how the heat is targeted directly on all the correct spots. Our boy is so relaxed wearing them and he can move about with ease too without it slipping. The customer service has been fantastic and the braces arrived really swiftly. Would highly recommend!

Fit properly and comfortable

My 12 year old lurcher, Blue, was diagnosed with arthritis in her hips recently, the PetieTec hip brace arrived today. Communication has been first class from placing my order through to delivery. I’m hoping they help to ease Blue’s joint pain and stiffness over time. The hip brace arrived today, earlier than expected which is great! They seem to fit properly and don't cause any discomfort to my dog so far.

Soothing the muscles and reduce limping

Molly loves these heat braces. We have them on one of her legs and her hips after hydrotherapy. Great for soothing the muscles and as you can see, they're so comforting they always make her sleepy! Molly, our chocolate lab, loves her heat braces from Petie Tec. And we love the fact that they're rechargeable, portable and very convenient to use any time, anywhere. They really help in soothing her joints and muscles and Molly seems to walk better (reduced limping) after using the heat braces. Thank you Petie Tec for this innovative product!
