Can your dogs have carrots? The answer is YES.
In fact, not only is carrot safe, but it also can serve as a healthy, low-calorie snack for your pup. And most dogs also enjoy eating carrots.
Benefits of Carrots for Dogs
- Carrots contain essential vitamins and minerals like beta carotene (which the body converts to vitamin A), vitamin K, potassium and more, which offer dog owners an affordable and nutritious snack for their pets.
- Carrots are perfect for rewarding good behavior, without the calorie count associated with biscuits and other treats.
- Carrots can improve your dog’s dental health. Some vets recommend cold or frozen carrots for teething puppies, as a way to relieve teething discomfort. Large frozen carrots make cheap and edible chew toys. Furthermore, chewing on carrots can also help improve your dog’s dental health.
How much carrots can you feed your dog?
Carrots should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories. Although dogs aren’t usually at risk for cavities, too many high-sugar treats could lead to dental decay. Unlike more abrasive dog food and treats, which clean the teeth, carrots won’t clean your dog’s teeth as he eats.
How to Give Your Dog Carrots
- Always talk to your vet about the quantities and other concerns associated before giving your dog a new food.
- Just as you would for any other fruits and vegetables, make sure that carrots are thoroughly washed and/or peeled to remove all dirt and pesticides.
- Cut whole carrots and even carrot sticks into bite-size chunks before feeding them to your dogs to prevent choking, especially in small dogs.
